The University of the Arts London (UAL) and Alumno Developments Ltd are proposing to redevelop 2-10 Steedman Street, 1 Hampton Street along with the arches under the adjacent railway viaduct, into student accommodation and ground floor commercial space with the creation of a public walkway between Hampton Street and Steedman Street.
The proposals comprise of approximately 221 bedrooms, the majority of which are within self contained cluster flats of between 7 and 10 beds. There are also a small number of studio flats. The management office, common room and other associated amenities are located on the ground floor.
UAL, which includes the London College of Communication (LCC) and Camberwell College of Arts (CCA) in Southwark will use the accommodation for its students. The student rents will be affordable and the proximity of the scheme to LCC (less than 5 minutes walk) means that students studying there will not have travel costs on top of their rent. UAL intend to take some of the commercial space for use as ‘incubation’ units. These will be start up facilities offering flexible, affordable working/studio space for UAL graduates who are seeking to establish themselves within the creative arts industries or start their own businesses.
